Boudicca: Warrior Queen and Mother

I wrote this 2012, around the time that I was taking a class in women’s studies. And Boudicca is one of the most heroic women that I’ve heard of and I wanted to write this tribute to her because she is went Molly Weasley on the Romans for not just betraying her husband’s will and publicly whipping her but also for gang-raping her daughters. She scared the Romans!

Oir dh’iarr Sibh a dhìoladh ‘n urram Ur sluaighBecause You wanted to avenge the honor of Your people
‘S Ur nigheanan, ‘Nur bana-ghaisgeach rìoghail…And of Your daughters, as a royal warrior…
Och, dh’iarr rìoghachd chian ‘stiùireadh Ur tìr,Alas, a distant dominion wanted to control Your land,
‘Na Bainrìgh nam borb…A Queen of the barbarians…

Bhrath ‘n Ròimh an tiomnadh fhèin Ur cèile; thuirt eRome betrayed the very will of Your husband; he said
Gum feumadh ‘n Ròimh co-riaghladh le Ur clann,That Rome would have to rule together with your children,
Ur nigheanan. An àite, chuir na RòimhichYour daughters. Instead, the savage Romans
Ghairg’ tàmailt cinneadh…Insulted a nation…

Sgiùrs Ròimhich Sibh gu follaiseach mus thug iadRomans whipped you publicly before they raped
An èiginn ur dithis nighean. Sibh, ‘Nur màthairYour two daughters. You, a furious mother
Air bhàinidh ‘s Bainrìgh, bhrosnaich Sibh na treubhanAnd the Queen, You incited the tribes
An aghaidh ‘n Ròimhe…Against Rome…

Airson a’ mhaighich ‘dh’fhuasgail Sibh ‘san ainmBecause of the hare that You released in the name of
Andraste, thuirt an targradh fhògradh ‘n Ròimh uaibh…Andraste, the divination said to expel Rome from you…
Chreach ‘s loisg Ur feachdan Lunnainn ‘s dùnan eileYour troops sacked and burned London and other
An Ròimhe shuaraich…Forts of vile Rome…

Ghaorr claidheamhan cuirp Ròimhich nach do theich fhath’stSwords pierced the bodies of Romans who had not yet fled
An tàmailt na Bainrìgh’, a’ chorraich mhàtharThe indignation of the Queen, the wrath of a mother
A marbhaidh neach sam bith gun feuch a chiùrradhWho will kill anybody who tries to hurt
A’ chlann fhèin a ghràidh…Her own beloved children…

Dh’ath-bhruidhnich ‘n riaghladair Ròimheach an t-armThe Roman governor regrouped the army
An Iar ‘s chasgair iad Ur n-arm, leigeilIn the West and massacred Your army, leaving
Loch fala ‘s cnocan marbhanan, gun tèarmannA lake of blood and hills of dead bodies, without defense
Airson Ur cinnidh…For Your people…

An àite tràilleachd, nàire follaisiche, Instead of enslavement, public disgrace,
‘S an cur gu bàs, dhiùlt Sibh Ur glacadh tro bàsAnd the execution, You refused Your capture through death
Le nimh. Chan eil fhios againn air an dàn UrBy poison. We know not of the fate of Your
Dith’s nighean Ur gràidh…Two beloved daughters…

‘Bhaintighearna, nach bi faoin Ur tòrachd, ‘na mnaoiMy Lady, may Your quest not be in vain, as a woman who
A cathaidh ‘dhìon Ur cinneadh, Ur tìr, Ur clannShall war to protect Your people, Your land, Your children
An aghaidh rìoghachd sanntach, gun iochd. B’eagalAgainst a greedy, merciless dominion. They were
Dhaibh Oirbh, ‘na mnaoi…Afraid of You, a woman…
